da dobrowin: It may have taken a while, but few are likely to have been surprised to see Unai Emery relieved of his duties at Arsenal last week.
The 48-year-old joined the Gunners last summer after Arsene Wenger departed following the end of his 22-year reign in north London. However, after a good initial start – the team went on a 22-game unbeaten run after losing the first two matches to Manchester City and Chelsea – they were only able to finish in fifth-place and were easily dispatched in the Europa League final against the Blues.
After a seven-match winless run, the former PSG man was out of the door. Now, the hunt for a new boss commences, and there are likely to be a large amount of names thrown about. The new man in the dugout will not be Massimiliano Allegri, though, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, as the former Juventus boss has said no to taking the job as soon as he was approached.
On paper, that could be a blow to the Emirates outfit. The 52-year-old is a born winner, picking up six Serie A titles already during his career. Not only that, he also took the Old Lady to two Champions League finals during his time there.
Having said that, him turning down the Gunners could be a blessing in disguise. At this point, Arsenal need a new direction and a new philosophy. Although Allegri has a strong track record, it would not feel too different from Emery’s appointment. Both are foreign managers at a similar age with several clubs under their belt, and they have both picked up trophies over the years. There is nothing wrong with any of that, but for them, this is just another club. Arsenal could do with someone who understands what they are all about.
Also, another huge problem is the fact that the Italian speaks very little English. That, in itself, would be a huge obstacle in regards to his ability to implement his philosophy. Arsenal don’t have time to wait until he has a grasp of the language. They need someone to hit the ground running.
He has done fantastically well during his career. But he would not be the man for the Gunners. They have had a lucky escape here.
