Marcelo Bielsa’s side got their campaign off to the perfect start at Ashton Gate when they cruised to a 3-1 victory, leaving Lee Johnson to claim he feels that team will ‘win the division’ if they remain fit (Sky Sports).
Hernandez, who managed to net 12 goals and assist a further 12 assists in his 41 appearances last season for Leeds (Transfermarkt), was named the club’s Player of the Year and the veteran seemingly appeared to pick up his displays from where he left off last season as he was hugely influential in a campaign that ultimately ended disappointingly for the Whites.
He got things started for Leeds in the first half with a well-taken goal from just outside the box as he managed to turn on the ball and fire a curling shot into the corner beyond the ‘keeper.
Despite being 34-years-old, the Spaniard was heavily involved in the game and turned provider for the second as he managed to beat Callum O’Dowda inside the penalty area before putting in a cross for Patrick Bamford to head into the back of the net.
Given the Man of the Match award by Sky Sports for his performance, they went on to state in their online report: “34 years of age but showing no signs of slowing down. Given a remarkable amount of space for the opener, Championship defenders will take note not to give him that much time on the edge of the box. His assist for Bamford’s goal was also a sumptuous piece of attacking play.”
And, as is the norm within the modern era, many fans swarmed to Twitter to share their own praise for the club favourite and were full of glowing reviews.
Here are just some of their reactions…
